DVA gardening in Perth

Once DVA has approved your gardening, we arrange it and handle the invoicing with DVA.

Veteran Home Help is an independent private business. We are not part of, endorsed by or acting for the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) or any government agency. DVA decides what you are approved for.

About Rob and Paul

How we fit your gardening to your DVA approval

Gardening is one of the household services DVA can approve: its policy manual lists lawn mowing and gardening, and the MRCA's own definition of household services names gardening. Your approval letter sets how many gardening visits DVA will fund in the approval period and the most it pays for each one. To give a real example, one letter we've seen, from 2026, approved 13 gardening services a year at up to $239.70 each, enough for 3 hours of gardening at DVA's rate that year. Our usual plan is 2 to 3 hours every 2 weeks, but your letter has the final say on how often we come. We start by agreeing with you which parts of the garden matter most, then book the visits on a regular schedule so nothing has to be arranged each time. We do the gardening your approval pays for, within the approved time, and invoice DVA after each visit. Tree work and landscaping sit outside household services, so DVA won't fund those. Applying is up to you, or someone you nominate: we can't lodge the claim for you.

Does DVA pay for gardening? Yes, if your household services approval lists it: DVA's policy manual includes lawn mowing and gardening among household services, paid up to the amount per visit on your letter.

What's included in our DVA gardening

Our DVA gardening covers the tasks below, booked within your approved amount and as often as your approval allows. We agree exactly what's included with you before the first visit, within your approval. Anything your DVA approval doesn't list isn't included, because DVA pays only for the services on your letter.

Included

  • Regular care of your garden, in the time your approval sets for each visit
  • The parts of the garden and the jobs you choose, agreed with you before the first visit
  • Visits on the schedule your letter sets, for example 2 to 3 hours every 2 weeks (example only)

Not included

  • Services your DVA approval doesn't list
  • Tree work, such as lopping, trimming or removing trees (DVA counts it as household maintenance)
  • Landscaping and synthetic lawn installation (DVA doesn't count these as household services)
  • Taking away large rubbish that won't fit in your household bins

How DVA-funded gardening works with us

Three steps, once DVA has approved your gardening. We don't lodge claims: you, or someone you nominate, apply to DVA first.

  1. Call us or send the form

We check with you that your approval lists gardening, how many services a year it allows and the most DVA pays for each.

  2. Email us your two documents

After we've spoken, email us your approval letter and the one-page supplier sheet with your Transaction Reference Number (TRN).

  3. We book your gardening and invoice DVA

We agree with you what's done in your approved time, book the visits as your letter lists them, and invoice DVA after each one.

What to send usNot sure which papers you have? Call us and we'll talk you through them.

The most DVA will pay for gardening in 2026

DVA pays for gardening up to the maximum cost per service on your approval, and up to $633.47 a week for all your household services together. In 2026, DVA's standard maximum rate is $79.90 an hour including GST. As an example only, a 3-hour gardening visit comes to up to $239.70 at that rate; your approval sets your own amount. DVA's rule is that anything above your approval is yours to pay, so we fit each visit to your approval.

Household services or Veterans' Home Care for gardening?

Veterans' Home Care (VHC) has a Home and Garden Maintenance service, but DVA's VHC page doesn't list gardening in it: the only garden job it names is lawn mowing, next to gutters, windows and minor maintenance. Gardening is named in household services instead, so your approval has to list it, with a number of visits a year and a maximum amount for each, and you choose who does it. Even where VHC does help outdoors, DVA allocates the VHC provider, you pay $5 for each hour, and the yearly limit is 15 hours. Once you hold an MRCA household services approval, VHC Home and Garden Maintenance is closed to you, so the two can't be combined. We provide gardening for household services approvals.

DVA gardening questions

The two questions veterans and their families ask us most come first, then the ones about gardening itself.

Do you handle the paperwork?

Yes, once DVA has approved gardening for you. After we've spoken, send us your DVA approval letter and its supplier sheet, and each visit is invoiced to DVA once it's done. We can't apply on your behalf: the claim is made by you or by someone you nominate, and ex-service organisation advocates can help with it.

Which other services can you provide?

House cleaning, ironing and laundry inside your home, and window, gutter and solar panel cleaning for single-storey homes. We book each as its own service, and only when your letter lists it.

What if my garden needs more than my approval covers?

We do the gardening your approval pays for and keep every visit inside it. If your garden needs more time than the approval allows, we agree with you which jobs to do first, and the rest waits for the next visit.

More on this

How often can I have gardening through DVA?

As often as your approval allows. The letter lists how many gardening visits DVA funds a year and the most it pays for each: one real letter we've seen allowed 13 a year, about one every four weeks, while 2 to 3 hours every 2 weeks is what we usually plan.

More on this

Can Veterans' Home Care do my gardening instead?

Not as gardening: the outdoor job on DVA's VHC Home and Garden Maintenance list is lawn mowing, and that help has a cap of 15 hours a year. With a household services approval under the MRCA, VHC home and garden help stops being an option, so your gardening is paid through your approval when it lists gardening.

What if I need to cancel a visit?

Let us know at least 48 hours ahead to cancel or move a gardening visit. A visit cancelled at shorter notice is charged, and since DVA pays only for services that were delivered, you pay that charge, not DVA. The details are in our Terms.

Where this comes from

The DVA facts on this page come from DVA's own pages, listed below with the date we last checked each one, and from a real DVA approval letter we've seen (anonymised, read on 19 October 2026). Rob's words, and anything we say we've seen, come from his own DVA work.

This page was last updated on 27 October 2026. DVA decides what you are approved for; if anything here differs from your own letter, your letter is what counts.
