Veteran Home Help

How DVA funding works

Who is eligible for DVA household services?

Household services depend on an accepted service-related condition and DVA's assessment, not on your card.

Veteran Home Help is an independent private business. We are not part of, endorsed by or acting for the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) or any government agency. DVA decides what you are approved for.

Who can get DVA household services?

You may be eligible for DVA household services if you can't manage household tasks because of an injury or condition that DVA has accepted as related to your service, and DVA assesses that you reasonably need help with them. It is not decided by your card: a Gold Card on its own doesn't mean DVA pays for a cleaner. A DVA delegate makes the decision, usually after an assessment by an occupational therapist that DVA arranges. The help is normally for tasks you did yourself before your injury, although DVA has some discretion. Since 1 July 2026, DVA considers all new household services claims under the Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act (MRCA), whenever and wherever you served. If you already receive household services under the DRCA, they continue until the renewal date on your determination letter. If household services don't fit your situation, a Gold or White Card lets you be assessed for Veterans' Home Care instead, which works differently and has a small co-payment.

Does a Gold Card mean DVA pays for a cleaner?

Not on its own. A Gold Card (Veteran Card, All Conditions) lets you be assessed for Veterans' Home Care, which has a co-payment and a provider DVA allocates. Household services, where you choose your provider, depend on an accepted service-related condition and DVA's assessment of what you need. See Veterans' Home Care or household services.

What to do next

If you think you're eligible, you can apply to DVA with form D9319, or ask an ex-service organisation advocate to help. If you already have an approval, see what to send us.

Where this comes from

Every fact on this page comes from DVA's own website and documents.
