How DVA funding works

How to apply for DVA household services

The claim form, where to send it, who can help, and what happens after DVA decides.

Veteran Home Help is an independent private business. We are not part of, endorsed by or acting for the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) or any government agency. DVA decides what you are approved for.

How do I apply for DVA household services?

You apply to DVA yourself, or someone you nominate applies for you. The claim form is D9319, Claim for Household Services Compensation. Send it to DVA by email to hhs@dva.gov.au, or by post to GPO Box 9998, Brisbane QLD 4001. DVA then assesses what you need, usually with an occupational therapist that DVA arranges, and a DVA delegate decides. If DVA approves your claim, your approval letter lists each service you can have, how many a year and the maximum cost of each, for a set period, and you receive a one-page supplier information sheet with your Transaction Reference Number (TRN). You don't have to do this alone: ex-service organisation advocates help veterans and their families through the claims process, and DVA says they don't charge for this, though some ask a small administration fee. You can also call DVA on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372). A cleaning business can't lodge the claim for you, and we don't.

Step by step

What happens between your claim and your first visit.

  1. Fill in form D9319

Download it from DVA's website, or ask an advocate to help you.

  2. Send it to DVA

By email to hhs@dva.gov.au, or by post to GPO Box 9998, Brisbane QLD 4001.

  3. DVA assesses what you need

Usually with an occupational therapist that DVA arranges. A DVA delegate decides.

  4. Your approval letter arrives

With the one-page supplier information sheet showing your Transaction Reference Number (TRN).

  5. Send us your two documents

By email, after we've spoken. See what to send us.

Who can help me apply?

Help with your claim comes from DVA and from ex-service organisations, not from a service provider.

  • Ex-service organisation (ESO) advocates help veterans and families through the claims process. Find one near you on the Advocacy Register.
  • DVA: 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372).
  • Someone you nominate can lodge the claim for you.

Applying for Veterans' Home Care instead

Veterans' Home Care is a different program with its own assessment: phone the VHC assessment agency on 1300 550 450. See the difference between the two.

Where this comes from

Every fact on this page comes from DVA's own website and documents.

Checked against DVA's website on 25 October 2026. DVA decides what you are approved for; if anything here differs from your own letter, your letter is what counts.
