How DVA funding works

How long does DVA take to pay for household services?

The two ways DVA pays for household services, and what DVA has said about how quickly it pays.

Veteran Home Help is an independent private business. We are not part of, endorsed by or acting for the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) or any government agency. DVA decides what you are approved for.

How does DVA pay for household services, and how long does it take?

DVA pays for approved household services in one of two ways. You can pay your provider and claim the money back from DVA, which your approval letter calls the preferred method and says usually results in faster payment. Or you can ask your provider to invoice DVA directly, by giving them the one-page supplier information sheet with your Transaction Reference Number (TRN); the provider then uploads each invoice to DVA's Provider Upload Page. Veteran Home Help invoices DVA, so once your services are approved you don't wait for a reimbursement for the work we invoice. DVA doesn't publish a payment term. In a 2024 case study, the Commonwealth Ombudsman reported DVA's own figure that it was consistently processing more than 90% of household services invoices within 20 business days. That is DVA's statement, not a guarantee. If any part of a job is above your approved amount, we agree it with you before we book.

The two ways DVA pays

Your approval letter describes both. You decide which one you use.

You pay, then claim it back

You pay the provider and claim a reimbursement from DVA with your TRN. Your approval letter calls this the preferred method, usually faster.

The provider invoices DVA

You give the provider your one-page supplier sheet, and they invoice DVA for each service, up to your approved amount. This is how we work.
